One, two, three bottles of beer on the wall.

Drunk.

Caroline hadn't really ever understood why Damon and Stefan drank so much, before she was a vampire. They pretty much lived and breathed scotch and brandy and whiskey, and she would just roll her eyes.

And then she was one.

It cut the hunger, and was one of the things that actually made you sort of forget the amount of crap that you had going on. It helped. And that was why, if you asked her, she was drunk as she walked home. Her heels dangled from her fingers, and she still had a glass of rum and something in her hand. It was multitasking at it's finest, and of course had absolutely nothing to do with anything that possibly happened in the last month or so.

Which doesn't really explain why, when she looked up and saw Lauren coming towards her, she actually just stopped. Not slowed down, not flashed her a smile, she just stopped, and her brows furrowed. "Hey," she said, a little loud so that she'd hear her. "Hey, do you have a second?"

And she doesn't even know what she wants to talk about out of the giant list of things she's got that she wants to talk to Lauren about, and she hasn't picked one, but she downs the rest of her drink with a shudder before she just sets it down by the wall so one of the cleaning bots'll get it.

Lauren can't help it; she freezes, then looks over her shoulder as if to check if there's anyone around. Of course, she's still wearing vervain so she can't be compelled, but that's not to say Caroline couldn't still do her harm if she wanted.

"Um, sure," she says, trying not to let her nerves show. She had just come up to see if the holodeck was free while everybody else was off at the party, but of course she wasn't the only person to have had that thought and she had been turned away by Sherlock's terse 'go away'. She hadn't told anybody where she was going, but Sam would miss her before too long.

"What's up?"

Lauren paled; she hadn't even thought about the fact that Caroline might be able to overhear their conversation, though now that she thought about it she should've known. "Caroline, if you heard what we were saying then you'd know that I don't think you're 'bad'. And I was grateful to you for helping me. I still am."

Going for a walk with a vampire - and a drunk one at that - wasn't on the top of Lauren's 'to-do' list, but here she goes anyway. "Um, sure," she says, falling into step beside Caroline as they make their way down the corridor.

As the silence stretches out she feels the need to say something, even though none of her discussions with Caroline have ever been particularly fruitful. "I'm sorry that people were hurting you with vervain, back home. That isn't why I used it, though. I didn't even know that it would burn you, or I would've been more careful with it," she says seriously.

"Yes, I'm fine," Lauren says shortly, and they walk a few more steps before she stops suddenly. "Caroline, please, I need to explain something." She waits until the young woman is turned towards her, then takes a deep breath before speaking.

"You say you get why I want it - because Klaus used his powers to compel me to agree with him and forget my objections. It's not because of what you can do - if I was afraid of that I'd have to hide from you, and Bruce, and the mutants, and most of the people on this station. I'm not afraid of supernatural beings, I'm used to them," she says, frowning. "But I am scared of people who take advantage of others, who use their abilities to violate people's minds and show absolutely no remorse about the fact when they're confronted with it. That's what I'm afraid of."

Lauren listens with a slightly disbelieving expression on her face, obviously torn about the information Caroline is revealing to her. When the other woman finally stops talking Lauren's not even sure where to begin.

"...Caroline, I'm sorry that you went through that. I don't know if you have any way to tell that I'm being truthful, but trust me, I am. It sounds horrible, and I can understand how it would make you distrust people. But I would never do anything like that, and I'd never let anybody here do that either. I promise it," she says, and she reaches out, voluntarily touching Caroline's hand for the first time since everything started happening. There's no vervain, so it's just skin to skin contact, pure and simple.

"You're not alone. And we are not the bad guys either."

"Of course you could," Lauren says, and there's a real warmth in her voice in contrast to her usual businesslike tone. "I'd like that." Making friends with a vampire is nowhere near the strangest thing that has ever happened to Lauren - in fact, it feels downright normal. "Especially since there's only so many experiments you can run in a lab before you start to go a little bit crazy."

"Sure." Lauren gave Caroline's hand a quick squeeze before letting it go, her own hands delving deep into the pockets of her oversized sweater. "And if you need anything, I'm here to help. Really."
